Visitors to the Riviera Maya can enjoy and endless list of fabulous attractions, including the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum and Chitzen Itza, the world renowned scuba diving and snorkeling of Cozumel, and the charming town of Playa del Carmen with its many boutique shops and laid back Mexican atmosphere.
The Riviera Maya is a great place for couples and families alike, as the endless activities and beautiful beaches make for wonderful lasting memories. Singles and active travelers will also enjoy a Riviera Maya vacation, but may wish to opt for a hotel closer to Playa del Carmen where there is many discos and bars to keep you dancing into the night.
Fly to Cancun and enjoy a scenic drive south to the fascinating Riviera Maya which stretches over 150 kms from Cancun to Tulum, and is the State of Quintana Roo's fastest growing area. Low dense jungle vegetation is on both sides of the road, and as the hotels are right on the beaches, set back from the road, you hardly see any signs of life apart from vendors selling serapes or other handicrafts. When you reach your destination and turn off the highway, you are in another world. The beaches are magnificent. Since many of the hotels in this area are somewhat isolated, each offers a wide range of activities and dining alternatives. Many properties are of the luxury standard, so if you are stressed out and deserve pampering, this may well be the ideal choice for you.
In Playa del Carmen itself, once merely the stopping off point for the ferry to Cozumel, there has been considerable development but the town itself has kept its old world charm. The shopping and restaurants here offer a good variety, and the whole town is very photogenic.
Since you are practically on the doorstep of Tulum, there is no excuse not to visit this fascinating site. The only walled city built by the Maya, and dating from the 16th century, it is right on a cliff overlooking the sea and the welcome breeze refreshes whilst your knowledgeable guide conducts the tour. Take a water bottle and wear good shoes, you will be glad you did. There are great photo opportunities here, especially if you spot one of the many large iguanas basking on the warm stones. Also within close range is Xel-ha, a park and natural aquarium with four interlocking lagoons offering great swimming and snorkeling.
